4 Homemade Beauty Products Straight Out of Your Pantry

February 10, 2017 by Kari Karch

When it comes to taking care of our bodies, all the lotions and potions at the drugstore can take a toll on the wallet. On average, Americans spend $426 billion on beauty products … and women alone spend $15,000 in their lifetime. That’s a lot of promises of youth in a bottle! And with the rise of certain health concerns from so many chemicals found in these products, it’s time you bring your beauty routine back to the basics with simple homemade ingredients.

For the past 4 years I’ve been making my own beauty supplies, including toothpaste, body scrubs, deodorant, and makeup remover pads. Not only do I save a bundle at the checkout counter, I am also fully aware of each ingredient that will go on and in my body. The bonus is that all of these products work wonders, smell absolutely delightful, and the best part is that everything is probably already stocked in your pantry! Let me know your favorite recipe in the comments section!

Homemade Toothpaste

Ingredients:
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup coconut oil
2 tsp. fine sea salt
20 drops peppermint essential oil

Directions: Mix all ingredients together and place in a small glass jar. Use daily. (I recommend taking one teaspoon of the mixture and combining it with one teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide to whiten teeth once a week).

DIY Deodorant

Ingredients:
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup almond oil
2 Tbsp. shea butter
1/4 cup beeswax
1 Tbsp. vitamin E oil
1 Tbsp. zinc oxide
10-20 drops of essential oil (I like tea tree or lemongrass)

Directions: Melt the coconut oil, almond oil, shea butter, beeswax and vitamin E oil in a double boiler. Allow the mixture to cool for 3 minutes then stir in the zinc oxide and essential oil. Using a funnel, pour the liquid into the deodorant containers. Allow to cool completely before putting on the lid.

Makeup Remover Pads

Ingredients:
1 8oz. tall mason jar
3 Tbsp. fractionated coconut oil (liquid form)
3 Tbsp. filtered water
20 drops lavender essential oil
Round cotton makeup pads

Directions: Mix ingredients into the bottom of the mason jar and fill with cotton pads. Shake jar and let settle upside down until all the pads are damp. Remove one pad at a time and wipe off any makeup on eyes or face.

Ginger Grapefruit Sugar Body Scrub

Ingredients:
1/2 cup coconut oil
2 cups granulated sugar
1 Tbsp. vegan food coloring (red)
10 drops ginger essential oil
10 drops grapefruit essential oil

Directions: Melt the coconut oil over low heat and remove. Mix in with remaining ingredients and stir till a light pink color is achieved. Store in a glass jar. Use in the shower on freshly washed skin to exfoliate and moisturize skin.
