There’s something magical about a National Food Holiday. Each day on our monthly calendar, we get to honor an iconic food item and hopefully learn the whereabouts of its origin. In most cases, the best part is not just acknowledging that specific food, but rather having the opportunity to devour a scrumptious sampling of nostalgia.

Some of the food holidays are classic staples such as National Hot Dog Day, National Fried Chicken Day and National Wine Day. And then there are a couple of ‘things that make you go hmmmm’. National Mincemeat Day (say what?), National Turkey Neck Soup Day (I cannot make this up), or National Indian Pudding Day (pretty sure I do not have a recipe for that one).

Mostly, these food holidays are a joyous way to give us quite the belly laugh and also a full belly. My all-time favorite has to be National Donut Day.

I repeat, National Donut Day. This festivity of sweet and savory spherical heaven takes place the first Friday in June.

Who can resist the sweet pillow-like dough that’s fried to a golden hue and dipped in a sea of sugary goodness? This classic dessert is a wink and a nudge to our youth and I’m ready to celebrate! Are you?

Here is my super simple recipe for homemade donuts that will be ready to devour in a matter of minutes. You’re going to want to double the recipe because seconds and thirds might not be enough. After all, we are honoring a national holiday on our calendars right?
