You’ve probably seen it hundreds of times before: that little, blue square ENERGY STAR® logo, just minding its own business on the front of home appliances, electronics, building materials and other helpful products. Without much fanfare or hoopla, these energy-efficient marvels quietly go about their business while conserving our precious natural resources… saving you money while helping to save the planet.

But have you ever wondered what that little emblem really stands for, and just what it means to be “ENERGY STAR® Certified”? If so, you’ve come to the right place!

What does the ENERGY STAR® label mean?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched the ENERGY STAR® program in 1992, at a time when both business leaders and environmentalists recognized that economic growth and environmental protection can—and must—go hand-in-hand.

Today, ENERGY STAR® is a widely recognized and trusted label on products that meet strict energy-efficiency requirements set by the EPA. ENERGY STAR® products are third-party certified and their efficiency is subject to ongoing testing and verification.

Products that have earned the ENERGY STAR® seal help consumers save energy and money without sacrificing performance. By using less energy, these products also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.

The ENERGY STAR® label can be found on dozens of different product categories found in the home and office including light bulbs, appliances, consumer electronics, and heating and cooling equipment.

Fun Fact: ENERGY STAR® appliances use an average of 10 to 30% less energy than equivalent products. Learn more at www.energystar.gov.

Real-World Impact of the ENERGY STAR® Program

Thousands of organizations across the nation — including nearly 40% of the Fortune 500® — partner with ENERGY STAR. Together with the EPA, they deliver cost-saving energy efficiency solutions that help protect the climate, improve air quality, and protect public health.

Since its inception in 1992, the ENERGY STAR program and its partners have helped American families and businesses:

  • Save 5 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity.
  • Avoid more than $500 billion in energy costs.
  • Achieve 4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions.

Today, nearly 90% of American households recognize the ENERGY STAR® symbol, and ENERGY STAR® certification is available in more than 75 residential and commercial product categories.
