Buying Guide: NEW Kenmore Top Freezer Refrigerators
Our newest additions to the Kenmore kitchen appliance lineup are a pair of top-freezer refrigerators offering spacious, flexible food storage capacity and a host of premium features designed to help you customize your storage space.
These new models (#61332/5/9 – 20.5 cu. ft. and #62312/5/9 – 18.2 cu. ft.) are each offered your choice of white, black, or fingerprint-resistant stainless steel finish. Let’s take a quick look at some of their most important features, and how they can help you stay organized, save energy, and keep your favorite foods fresher for longer.
Standard Depth for Generous Capacity
Both new Kenmore models are offered in traditional “standard” depth, providing greater capacity than their counter-depth counterparts. The main difference between the two refrigerators is width: the 6133x measures 33 inches across, while the 6231x is 30 inches wide.
Their modest width dimension allows them to fit easily in smaller kitchens and other size-challenged spaces. But their total fresh & frozen storage capacity is actually quite spacious… a full-size 20.5 cu. ft. (6133x) and large-capacity 18.2 cu. ft. (6231x). That means you don’t have to compromise on interior space.
Note: Width and total interior capacity (fresh food and freezer space) are the only real differences between these two models. The features that follow are common to both new refrigerator models.
Adjustable Glass Shelves
The full-width, tempered glass shelving is adjustable in height, so you can customize your storage space and easily make room for taller items whenever you need to.
Fingerprint-Resistant Stainless Steel
Models with the stainless steel finish include a special coating that stands up to a busy household, so the beauty and durability of stainless steel remains looking great while smudges, fingerprints and minor oopsies wipe away easily with just a damp cloth.
Clear Dairy Compartment
Our handy dairy compartment stores butter and spreads at the ideal temperature, while the clear cover makes it easy to see at a glance what you have on-hand.
Clear Gallon-Size Door Bins
Three clear refrigerator door bins provide ample room to easily accommodate gallon-sized beverage containers, plus condiments, salad dressings, you name it. It’s a convenient space for quick access to your most often-used items. Both the fresh-food door bins and the freezer door bins are clear, for optimal visibility.
Humidity-Control Crisper Drawers
Keep your favorite fruits and vegetables fresher for longer! Choose the ideal humidity level in each of the two crisper drawers, and keep your leafy green veggies crisp while your strawberries stay sweet!
ENERGY STAR® Certified
Both new refrigerator models are certified to meet and exceed the EPA’s standards for energy efficiency. That means you can save money on your utility bills while helping to preserve our precious natural resources, every day.
Bright LED Lighting
Energy-efficient, long-lasting LED lighting casts a warm, natural light on the refrigerator’s interior, making it easy to find what you want and ensuring nothing is lost in the back corners.
Pocket-Style Door Handle
Elevate your kitchen décor with our stylish flush-front design. Sleek, recessed pocket handles match virtually all appliance styles and offer a timelessly elegant look.

FAQs
Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about top-freezer refrigerators.
Q: What is the difference between a “top freezer” and a “top mount” refrigerator?
A: No difference. Both are industry terms used to describe a refrigerator design that has the fresh-food compartment below, and the freezer compartment mounted above it.
Q: Are top-freezer refrigerators better than other types? If so, why?
A: It’s a matter of personal preference. Refrigerators with a top-mounted freezer have a classic design that most people are familiar with, and they fit easily in a wide range of kitchen styles and designs. They also tend to have a smaller footprint, so they take up less kitchen floor space than typical side-by-side and French-door designs.
Q: Are top-freezer refrigerators more or less affordable than other designs and types?
A: Generally speaking, top-freezer refrigerators tend to be more affordable than most other styles with similar feature sets and capacities. This is due to a number of factors, but mostly because of their simple design (i.e. they’re simpler to build) and their popularity (i.e. greater production means cheaper per unit). They also tend to be more energy-efficient, so they’re less expensive to operate over time.
Q: Why are top-freezer refrigerators more energy-efficient?
A: It’s simple physics and engineering. Most refrigerators of all kinds (top-mount, bottom-mount, side-by-side, French door, etc.) have their main mechanical components, such as the motor and compressor, built into the bottom of the unit. These components give off heat. By placing the freezer at the top, far away from the heat source, the fridge doesn’t have to work as hard to keep it cold.
Q: Which refrigerator brand is best?
A: In all honesty, every fridge brand is going to say theirs is the best. And that’s fair enough; we expect them to. But ask… do they bring a 110-year record of trusted performance and innovation? Do they offer the most desirable features at a fair value price? Are they designed with sleek, timeless style that coordinates with your kitchen décor? Bottom line: everyone thinks they’re the best, but we believe we make a pretty solid case for it.
