This recipe was passed to me by a childhood friend. making bread always seems to intimidate people. this recipe is so easy and comes out delicious each time. It also makes enough for gifts to friends (4 loaves) . It is great with pasta or just for homemade toast.

ingredients
- 2 tablespoons yeast
- 2 tablespoons white sugar
- 3/4 cup lukewarm water, in a bowl to dissolve
- 3 cup lukewarm water, in a bowl
- 1/3 cup melted shortening or oil
- 8 cup flour, in a separate large bowl
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoons salt
- 1 cup flour, use this to knead the mixture with

step 1 - Yeast mixture
Mix the first three ingredients (yeast, sugar and warm water) in a small bowl to dissolve yeast.

Mix the dissolved yeast mixture with the 3 cups of warm water and the melted shortening in a larger bowl
step 3- dry mixture
Combine the flour, sugar and salt in a large bowl. mix in the yeast mix from step 1 and 2. Mix together and knead with the 1cup of flour and let the mixture rise for 1 hour, punch down every 10 minutes during the hour.

Divide the dough into four portions and let rise for ten (10) minutes. Roll each portion like a jelly roll, elongated and pinch under. place on a greased cookie sheet and let rise for 1.5 hours or more.
step 5- Baking
Slice the tops of each loaf with three strokes just shallow with a sharp knife. Bake for 25 minutes @ 350 degrees. brush with hot butter when done.
